City of Culture

Brief

UK City of Culture is a designation given to a city in the United Kingdom for a period of one year. The award is given every four years to a city that demonstrates the belief in the transformational power of culture. The arts and cultural programme for the year celebrates the unique character of the city, its people, history and geography, its culture and place in the wider cultural offer of its region, and aims to make it a cultural destination for must-see events. Young people are at the heart of the programme – it is this group who will inherit the longer-term benefits as a result of the focus around learning and participation. 2017 saw Hull taking on the mantle of being the City of Culture and Coventry will be the chosen city for 2021.

You will be working in teams for this project, acting as a design consultancy for one of the cities that (we are imagining) is bidding to be the City of Culture in 2025. You are asked to produce a brand identity for the city which would be used as a key element in their bid strategy across a range of media. Each design team will present a competitive pitch for their city’s branding in an effort to win the prestigious award of Grillust’s City of Culture.
