The Ignorance Project
Brief
Select a TED talk and using the transcript of the talk as a sample copy, imagine a book based the subject of the talk. This book would be a much more extended and amplified version of this text, divided into sections/chapters, resulting in far more pages.
Design the front and back cover, prelims and a sequence of at least 5 double spreads from a chapter of your TED book: you will be required to demonstrate a considered use of grid, type hierarchy, images, composition and use of materials. You are aiming to bring the topic of the talk to life through design.
Required elements:
3D mock-up: A full size 3D mock-up to demonstrate materials, and any folding or interaction. Mandatory content to include: title and author’s name on the front cover and spine, the back cover should contain the publisher’s marque, website, price and bar code, ISBN and blurb about the publication. This mock-up can contain your printed designed pages or simply be made up of blank pages.
Prelim pages:
Full size flat prints for a considered sequence that includes at least half-title, title, imprint, contents and introduction. Chapter pages: Full size flat prints of at least 5 double page spreads. They should incorporate copy for at least 1,500 words of long form text matter and demonstrate how a chapter opens and then continues onto the following pages. Remember, you can use sample filler copy from another source for this.
Parameters: Page size: own choice Full colour throughout, or limited colour if you prefer Text block and cover can be printed on different stocks.
